How to get to Natales

Tips to arrive here

The way to Puerto Natales

Chile in the world map

Tutravesia is located in the southern tip of Chile, in Puerto Natales, the city closest to the Torres del Paine park. It is a small town located on the banks of the Last Esperanza fjord. We are 100 km from Torres del Paine and 246 km from Punta Arenas. Here you have the best infrastructure of hotels, restaurants and other services close to the park. Check below for tips on how to get here.

The two possible ways to reach Puerto Natales by plane are Puerto Natales airport and Punta Arenas airport. Both have direct and indirect flights from Santiago.

Puerto Natales airport: we have our own airport, but it only works in high season (summer) and has a lower frequency of flights. The airlines that fly here are LatamSky and JetSmart (as the frequency of flights and which airlines operate at that airport changes each season, we recommend that you check the companies websites for more information on flights). The trip takes around 3.5 hours and the airport is 15 minutes from the city. When you arrive there are taxis that can bring you and sometimes there are vans that make the collective transfer (since it is not a standardized service, it is not always available).

Punta Arenas airport: the other option is to arrive at Punta Arenas airport, the busiest in the region and therefore with more flight options. At the airport in Punta Arenas there are the same companies (LatamSky and JetSmart) with daily and often direct flights (some have a stopover in Puerto Montt). This airport is 20 km from the city of Punta Arenas and 226 km from Puerto Natales. Upon arrival you can take a bus to Puerto Natales directly from the airport, but we recommend that you buy tickets in advance. The companies that make this trip are Buses Fernandez and Bus Sur. If your arrival time does not fit with a bus connection, just take a taxi to spend the night in Punta Arenas and the next day take the bus leaving the city center.

If you need a private transfer between any of the airports and your accommodation, we can help you. Let us know when booking or email to reservas@tutravesia.com.

Until recently, the only way to reach Puerto Natales by car was through Argentine Patagonia, but with the recent operation of a ferry it became possible to arrive here exclusively on the Chilean side, through the Carretera Austral. Either way, the trip will be long! We are 3,100 km from Santiago and 2,300 km from Puerto Montt.

Argentine Patagonia: if you come from central Chile and the intention is to avoid the Carretera Austral (mostly unpaved and narrow road) the crossing to the Argentine side should be done at the height of the city of Osorno. In Argentina, just follow route 40 to the city of Rio Gallegos and cross the border at Casas Viejas, Don Guillermo or Dorotea (closest to Natales). For more information about the roads on the Argentine side we recommend you to visit the Ruta 0 website. For more information on border crossing points, visit the Chilean borders website.

Carretera Austral: the most adventurous option, where you will be able to know the Chilean Patagonia from end to end. Carretera Austral starts in Puerto Montt and to reach Puerto Natales you need to take a ferry in Caleta Tortel (if you are coming without a car) or Puerto Yungay (if you are coming by car). The crossing lasts 2 days and works throughout the year. Tickets must be purchased in advance on the Austral Broom website, where you can also find more information about the trip.

You can reach Puerto Natales by navigating in two ways: on the Navimag cruise or on the Austral Broom ferry. The two options come from different cities and in the case of Austral Broom it is possible to come by car.

Navimag: one of the most interesting options to make the trip to Puerto Natales. It is a cruise that travels from Puerto Montt through the fjords of southern Chile to Puerto Natales. There are 4 days of travel in a very comfortable boat with unique views. The frequency of departure is weekly and operates only in the summer season (October to April). For more information, visit the Navimag company website.

Austral Broom: it is a ferry that leaves from Caleta Tortel (if you are without a car) and from Puerto Yungay (for those who come by car). The trip lasts 2 days and has a stop on the remote island of Puerto Eden. The vessel has tilting seats, bathroom and kiosk, but it is much simpler than Navimag. There are departures throughout the year. For more information, visit the Austral Broom website.
